Cherenkov Telescope Array: a unique observatory to explore the TeV sky

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next-generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very high energies. With more than 100 telescopes located in the northern and southern hemispheres, CTA will be the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory. CTA will achieve a broad energy coverage, from 20 GeV to 300 TeV, by using three classes of telescopes. In this talk, I will present the CTA science case, together with the design of the telescopes, and their expected performance. I will also highlight the project status and the Dutch contribution.
